Mary the Earthly mother of Jesus, was one of the greatest woman in the Bible. Of all the women on the earth, why would God choose Mary to be the mother of Jesus? Certainly she must have been an awesome woman right? Why do you think she was chosen? What are her qualities like? Could we learn something from her?
1. Mary was humble
God loves people who are humble. Humility is one of the significant characteristics which pleases God. We see this from Mary’s song of praise in Luke Chapter 2. Mary says in her song that God had lifted up the humble and had considered her lowly state. Many scriptures from the bible says that God exalts the humble and resists the proud. Because Mary was humble, God had lifted her up to be the earthly mother of the Son of God. Can we also be humble enough like Mary so that God will consider and lift us high?
2. Mary was wise
When we get any good news regarding us being exalted, we get all excited without even stopping to think what it is and from where it came from. But Mary, when the angel greeted her, she was troubled and was thinking what sort of greeting that was. When the angel told her that she will conceive and bear a child, Mary did not immediately jumped to accept being the mother of the Son of God, but she inquired to the angel on how that would be possible. Wise people don’t take hasty decisions. Wise people do not react immediately. Wise people ponder and analyze before saying yes. Are we wise like Mary?
3. Mary was obedient
When the angel explained to her that this news is from God and holy spirit will help her, she did not disobey by saying no. She said “Behold am the maidservant, let it be done according to the word of the Lord”. This shows the respect and reverence she has for the Lord. She was obedient enough to accept a big change in her life. Are we obedient to God like Mary?
4. Mary was loving
We see the love and care Mary had for others from the time angel told her the news. She immediately visited her relative Elizabeth when she knew that she was pregnant. She loved Jesus and we see that she brought him up in wisdom, love and knowledge of the Lord. She grew anxious when Jesus was not found in the company of people when they went to the festival. Wherever Jesus preached, we see instances of Mary and her other children looking for Jesus. Mary was there when Jesus was on the cross. Mary was there when Jesus was taken to heaven. Mary was with the apostles even after continuing with them in the ministry. All this shows the earthly love she had for Jesus and others and the heavenly love she had for God and for the ministry of Jesus. Are we being loving like Mary?
5. Mary had faith
Without faith, Mary wouldn’t have been able to sustain that far. We see that Mary had abundant faith when she asked the servants in the wedding of cana to fill the jars with water even when Jesus told her that his time hadn’t come. Such was her faith. As the word of God says that faith is the substance of things not seen, we see that it was evident in the life of Mary from the time angel gave her the good news. Do we have faith like Mary?
My dear friends and my lovely ladies, do we have this God like qualities in us? Can we strive to be humble, wise, obedient, loving and faithful? When we have this desire to become good and holy, God will help us to be so and will be pleased and will surely exalt us. Amen! God Bless You!
